The Power of the Exemplar

Key Points The greatest impact is seen when rubrics, exemplars, and dialogue are combined. Introducing an exemplar after students have begun work can increase creativity.

Three years in a row, teachers have been saying: “This is my hardest teaching year.”

Teaching was already a difficult job. The amount expected of us, for the compensation, respect, and appreciation we are shown, was already unfair.

Even now—when I end a 13 hour day filled with investors saying no, sales calls bombed, metrics plummeting, and lots of tears—I tell myself, “I survived my first year of teaching. I can do anything.”

We naively looked at this year and thought it would get better. But we’re getting real now—it’s not. It’s still harder. And we’re sick of it.

So, we’re going to do everything we can to help teachers get through this year.

Including making Floop 100% free again.

Through the end of the 2021-2022 school year, any teacher using Floop will have unlimited access to all of Floop’s features. If we can help you reclaim your evenings and weekends, and reach every student whether they’re at school or at home, we will be here for you. And even while Floop is free, we’ll continue to work on new features that you’ve been asking for, like a growthbook for you to track student progress.

But, we’ll also help you with other things.

If you’re just done right now, if you’re thinking of leaving the classroom, we get it.

On the one hand, schools have never valued teachers more. Consider how you can take advantage of your leverage and negotiate for the things you’ve always needed.

Remember: You’re a superhero. Remember What Teachers Can Do.

But, as much as we’d implore you to stay because your kids need a good teacher, our sense of giving has unfortunately been used to take advantage of teachers for too long. Our education system cannot expect teachers to keep giving and giving. And there are other places that will value your skills.

We have paused all subscriptions for paying members. If you were a monthly subscriber, any fees paid in 2022 have been refunded and you’ll see no more payments moving forward. If you were a yearly subscriber, we are unable to refund payments from 2021, but we will give you 6 months free of Floop Premium for the new school year.

My school or district is already paying for a site-wide license. How does this announcement affect us?
While we’re unable to refund payments from 2021, we’ve added an additional 6 months to all active licenses.

How does this impact referrals?
You can still refer other teachers to gain monetary credits that you can put toward next year’s subscription.

How can I get my staff onboard?
We are offering implementation packages that include staff training, enhanced customer support, and a discount on next year’s license. Contact [email protected], and we’ll get you set up.

How will the Floop team continue?
Thanks for checking! We are a tiny, teacher-led startup doing our best. Just because Floop is free doesn’t mean our team doesn’t need to keep the lights on. If you’re able, you can make one-time contributions to the team. Other than that, we really appreciate you sharing Floop with your friends and colleagues as well as giving us feedback on how we can improve.
